Tourists, Hotel Employees and The Community Perform The Kebo Iwa Ogoh-Ogoh Parade at Kawi Resort

GIANYAR, balitourismnow.com – As the musicians cheered, the tourists cheered with joy. Their faces looked happy, and they always wore joyful smiles. Despite the long journey from afternoon to evening, they were still beaming with joy.

That was the atmosphere of the Kebo Iwa Ogoh-Ogoh parade at Kawi Resort, the day before Pengrupukan Day, Tuesday, March 17, 2026. As the title suggests, the giant statue, made of bamboo and painted paper, tells the story of the powerful Prime Minister of the Bedahulu Kingdom.

“Basically, we want to impress our guests, because during our promotional activities in Europe, many guests asked about Galungan, especially Nyepi, because they couldn’t go out at all,” said Dewa Diego, Director of Kawi Resort.

The Ogoh-Ogoh Kebo Iwa parade, which tells the story of the construction of the Gunung Kawi Temple, begins in the lobby of the resort. Accompanied by energetic and creative gamelan instruments, the Ogoh-Ogoh Kebo Iwa proceeds down the village road, escorted by security guards, pecalang and police.

The Ogoh-Ogoh tradition is an important part of Balinese culture and is typically performed during Pengerupukan, the evening before Nyepi.

These giant effigies symbolize negative energies and are paraded through communities as a ritual of purification before the island enters a day of silence, reflection, and renewal according to the Balinese Saka calendar.

This year, the Ogoh-Ogoh at Kawi Resort is inspired by the mighty figure of Kebo Iwa, a legendary prime minister in Balinese folklore known for his immense strength and historical significance in ancient Balinese stories.
