THE 1O1 Bali Oasis Sanur Collaborates with I Made Subrata, Showcasing 7 Visual Artworks

Guests staying at THE 1O1 Bali Oasis Sanur are in for a treat. The four-star hotel, located just a 5–10 minute walk from Sanur Beach, is currently hosting a painting exhibition titled “Pelestarian Lingkungan”

At least seven paintings are displayed along the lobby walls of THE 1O1 Bali Oasis Sanur. These artworks on canvas appear natural, yet their forms and colors are rich with meaning. The brushwork techniques and the variety of colors presented are truly captivating and pleasing to the eye.

“This exhibition aims to provide a creative space for local painters, allowing them to showcase their best works,” said General Manager I Nyoman Astika on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.

The paintings, featuring various subjects, have been exhibited since Saturday, April 10, and will run until June 10, 2026. They convey the beauty of Bali’s nature and culture. Hotel guests, whether checking in or out, are consistently impressed by these works created by a local artist.

“We provide an exhibition space for local artists. This painting exhibition is also part of PHM’s program—the management that oversees The 1O1 Oasis Sanur—which focuses on three key aspects: stay, eat, and experience,” he explained.

“Stay” refers to accommodation, “eat” to dining, and “experience” to delivering memorable moments for guests. This exhibition is part of the effort to create engaging experiences for visitors. As they pass through the lobby, they can enjoy the artworks of Balinese painters.

The seven paintings displayed at the hotel in the Sanur tourism area are titled: Sering Rice Terraces, Tree and Three Deer, Tree of Life, Nine Koi Formation, Facial Expression, Facial Expression 1, and Cat and Rose.

The exhibition is planned to run for two months, with the possibility of extension if deemed necessary. Previous exhibitions have also been extended.

Astika added that after presenting natural-style paintings, future exhibitions may feature artists with abstract styles. This way, each session will offer a different artistic experience.

“This is part of the marketing communication program, ensuring there are no long gaps between exhibitions. The paintings also serve as lobby decorations, so guests can enjoy something new after experiencing Bali’s natural beauty,” he added.

Made Subrata explained that, when appreciated more deeply, these paintings carry strong messages about environmental preservation. For example, the painting Sering Rice Terraces depicts the beauty of layered rice fields with birds flying above them.

Through this work, Subrata conveys that rice fields, as sources of food production, must be preserved and protected from land conversion. Recently, many productive rice fields have been converted for other uses.

Massive land conversion is feared to impact food security and disrupt the function of rice fields as water absorption areas. “This painting was born out of my concern for the preservation of rice fields in Bali,” he said.

Similarly, in his painting Tree of Life, Subrata reminds us that trees, as producers of oxygen, must be cared for wholeheartedly. Forests, as the place where trees grow, must be well protected to prevent disasters such as flooding.

In his work Nine Koi Formation, Subrata places trees above koi fish. This symbolizes that trees help preserve water, which is a vital source of life for fish and other living beings.

“The nine koi fish form the number nine, which is believed by many to bring good luck,” added the journalist-artist.

Meanwhile, in Facial Expression, Subrata presents the challenges faced by modern society. The faces depicted show a range of emotions—sadness, joy, stress, and more.

In this work, the faces are adorned with traditional “pepatran” motifs, conveying that life’s challenges are inevitable and should be faced with a joyful heart.

Subrata was born in Apuan Village, Baturiti District, Tabanan Regency, on December 31, 1965. He is a self-taught painter, inspired by Balinese artists such as Tusan and the renowned maestro Made Wianta, who is also his maternal cousin.

A graduate of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education program at FKIP Unud Singaraja (1989), Subrata is not bound to a single painting style. He works across abstract, expressionist, surrealist, and even decorative styles.

His subjects and themes are diverse, yet the Balinese nuance remains strongly present in his figurative works.
